Course Description: 

Constitutional controversies throughout the nation’s history have defined which persons were included (or not) among “We the People” and what rights were included (or not) among “the Blessings of Liberty.” This discussion-based seminar will proceed chronologically through a series of “constitutional moments,” ranging from early debates about liberty and property to more recent disputes about equality and dignity.

Steven A. Steinbach


Steven A. Steinbach teaches United States History and American Government courses and has served as History Department Chair at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. Previously he was a partner in the Washington, DC, law firm of Williams & Connolly LLP, where he specialized in criminal and civil litigation. He graduated from Yale Law School and Harvard College and received a master’s degree from St. John’s College, Annapolis. He is editor of With Liberty and Justice for All?: The Constitution in the Classroom (Oxford University Press, 2022).

Class sizes will be limited to 24 participants. Class participation will be on a first come, first served basis. If a class has more than 24 participants sign up, a wait list will be started. Should a participant be placed on a wait list he/she will be notified by e-mail.


CANCELLATION POLICY:

Participants can cancel and receive a full refund up to September 15. After September 15, there will be no refunds issued.
If Yale Alumni College cancels any course prior to its start, you may sign up for another course or your fee will be fully refunded.
